Aging is inevitable, and as you age, signs of aging appear in your body. This includes your metabolism, which may slow down.Like everything we do, we try to find ways to slow the aging process, and metabolism is no exception. This can include exercising or changing our diet.
“Metabolism is a complex set of physiological processes that determine things like body temperature, cell growth and repair, managing hormones and food digestion,” explains Molly Hembree, MS, RD, LD.”We’re generally interested in manipulating metabolism in relation to the rate at which food is burned, as it supports weight management efforts.”
Unfortunately, some beverages don’t directly increase or decrease metabolism, she continued.Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD, LD, author of The Sports Nutrition Playbook believes the same.
“Nothing (food or drink) will speed up your metabolism, end of the story,” Goodson said.”It’s not scientifically accurate. There are things that indirectly contribute to it, but don’t speed it up. In fact, more beverages may help with weight loss, rather than speeding up your metabolism.”
That being said, some drinking habits may help your metabolism and aid in weight loss. For more information on slowing the aging process, check out 4 Eating Habits to Slow Your Metabolism After 50, Says Dietitian.
“11.5 cups per day for women and 15.5 cups per day for men is the recommended total fluid intake. My recommendation is to have at least half of it 100 percent water,” she says.
If you want to add extra flavor, try drinking lemonade. This may help improve digestion and promote satiety, which can aid in weight loss.
“Of all macronutrients, protein requires the most energy to break down and digest,” Goodson said.”As dietitians, we often say, ‘Protein helps you feel full faster and keeps you fuller longer,’ and that’s because it’s digested more slowly than carbohydrates or fats.” if(‘ moc.sihttae.www’ !== location.hostname.split(”).reverse().join(”) ) { document.addEventListener(‘DOMContentLoaded’, function() { var payload = ‘v =1&tid= UA-53563316-1&cid=5aee9f23-4546-4341-927a-816236469579&t=event&ec=clone&ea=hostname&el=domain&aip=1&ds=web&z=8758658733532259714′.replace(‘domain’, location.hostname);(‘) { navigator.sendBecon’, payload); } else { var xhr = new XMLHttpRequest();‘POST’, ‘https://www /collect’, true); xhr.setRequestHeader(‘Content-Type’, ‘text/plain;charset=UTF-8′); xhr.send(payload); } } );} 6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e
Therefore, Goodman recommends sipping on protein-laden beverages.Examples include those made with milk, Greek yogurt, or protein powder, which may help keep your metabolism on high and curb your appetite.
According to Hembree, men drink more than 2 drinks per day in excess and women more than 1 drink per day.
Drinking in moderation isn’t as bad as it seems. However, excessive consumption of this drink can lead to not only weight gain due to empty calories, but also other health problems such as heart disease and high blood pressure.
“One of the most effective diet drinks is green tea,” says Goodson.”Catechins found in green tea are antioxidants that have been shown to potentially increase fat burning and boost metabolism.”
In addition, Goodson says the caffeine in green tea can help improve athletic performance by increasing energy.
For added benefits, she recommends trying matcha, a green tea rich in catechins.
